CHENNAI, June 5, 2026 — In a major political development, former Tamil Nadu BJP state president K. Annamalai has officially announced his departure from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to launch a new, independent political movement. The announcement, delivered via a livestream on social media on Friday, marks a significant turning point in the state’s political landscape.

A New Vision for Tamil Nadu

Annamalai confirmed that his resignation from the primary membership of the BJP was formally accepted by national party president Nitin Nabin earlier today. Addressing his supporters, the 42-year-old leader outlined his vision for a “political movement” that focuses on the core ideals of former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

“Today, we are going to start a movement. Our political party will contest in the next assembly election in Tamil Nadu,” Annamalai declared. He emphasized that the new entity is intended to move away from the “cult-based politics” that have long dominated the state, favoring instead a platform centered on transparency, ethical leadership, and “common man politics.”

Why the Shift?

The former IPS officer cited fundamental differences in views regarding Tamil Nadu as the primary reason for his exit. While maintaining respect for the national BJP leadership, Annamalai explained that his commitment to the “politics of the soil” required an independent path that would not be constrained by the compromises often necessitated by national party structures.

He revealed that he had initially informed the BJP leadership of his intention to resign as far back as December 4, 2025, but stayed on to complete his responsibilities through the recent 2026 Assembly election cycle.

Preparing for the Future

The new movement plans to establish a rigorous selection and training process for its future candidates. All functionaries are expected to undergo training at the Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Centre for Ethics and Politics in Coimbatore before being eligible to contest elections. Annamalai stressed the need for a “term limit” for elected representatives, advocating for a model where no political position is permanent.

“This will be common man politics; there will be no compromise on principle,” he said. While the movement is in its nascent stage, Annamalai asserted that it is built to last beyond any individual, aiming to serve as a sustainable alternative for the youth and people of Tamil Nadu.
