NEW DELHI — In a major strategic reinforcement of India’s long-range aerospace interception capabilities, the fourth squadron of the S-400 Sudarshan air defense missile systems has successfully arrived in India from Russia.

Defense sources confirmed to ANI that the sophisticated hardware arrived via a transport ship and is currently undergoing final technical clearance. The advanced surface-to-air missile (SAM) network is slated to be deployed in its designated operational sector very soon to secure Indian airspace against hostile aerial assets.

Overcoming Russia-Ukraine War Bottlenecks

The arrival of the fourth squadron marks a critical milestone in the execution of India’s 2018 defense contract with Moscow, worth over $\text{USD 5 billion}$ for five S-400 Triumf (renamed Sudarshan in Indian service) regiments.

While the Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully operationalized the first three squadrons along the western and northern borders to counter dual-threat vectors from China and Pakistan, the remaining two squadrons faced extensive logistical delays due to supply chain disruptions caused by the Russia-Ukraine war.

With the fourth squadron now on Indian soil, defense officials confirmed that the fifth and final squadron is on track to reach India within the next few months, effectively wrapping up the initial acquisition cycle.

Proven Combat Prowess: The Shadow of Operation Sindoor

The strategic urgency behind the Sudarshan deployment is underscored by its formidable operational history. The missile system played a decisive role in neutralizing aggressive maneuvers by the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) during Operation Sindoor.

During that high-intensity border escalation, the S-400 system secured a historic milestone in modern electronic warfare by registering the longest recorded surface-to-air kill in military history. The system successfully locked onto and brought down a high-value Pakistani surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft at an interception range exceeding 300 kilometers, completely crippling the adversary’s forward situational awareness.

Looking Ahead: Project Kusha and Five More S-400 Squadrons

India’s long-term air defense roadmap extends well beyond the current Russian contract. To maintain absolute air superiority over the subcontinent, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has already granted initial clearance for the procurement of five additional S-400 squadrons, which will undergo future structural induction.

Simultaneously, New Delhi is actively reducing its long-term external dependency through a high-tech indigenous program codenamed Project Kusha. Spearheaded by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) alongside Indian defense major Solar Industries acting as the primary development-cum-production partner, Project Kusha aims to manufacture a domestic long-range air defense system capable of intercepting enemy stealth fighters, drones, and ballistic missiles at matching tactical ranges.
